Church of St. Peter Bijelo Polje (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Church of St. Peter in Bijelo Polje is a seminal monument of Serbian Orthodox architecture dating back to the late 12th century. Founded around 1190 by Prince Miroslav of Hum, brother of Stefan Nemanja, the church serves as a bridge between Romanesque and Byzantine stylistic influences. It holds immense historical significance as the place where the Miroslav Gospel, one of the oldest and most beautiful Cyrillic manuscripts, was commissioned and kept. The building's design features two prominent bell towers on its western facade, which have undergone various modifications throughout the centuries. During the Ottoman period, the structure was converted into a mosque, but its original function was restored in the 20th century. Today, it remains a vital spiritual center for the Lim river valley, housing precious remnants of medieval frescoes that illustrate the complex cultural history of the Sandzak region.
