Durmitor National Park in northern Montenegro encompasses the limestone massif of the same name and has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1980. The hub for visitors is the town of Žabljak, located at an altitude of 1450 meters, making it the highest urban settlement in the Balkans. The park features 48 peaks over 2000 meters, with Bobotov Kuk being the highest at 2523 meters. The landscape is dotted with 18 glacial lakes locally called "mountain eyes," the most famous being the Black Lake (Crno Jezero), easily reachable from the town center. During the summer, the park is a prime destination for hiking, mountaineering, and mountain biking, while in winter, Žabljak transforms into Montenegro's leading ski resort. The flora includes rare black pine forests and over 1600 plant species. The regional cuisine is famous for Durmitor cheese and lamb slow-cooked under a metal lid known as "sač." Access is typically via road from Podgorica or Nikšić, with the P14 scenic route offering dramatic views across the Sedlo pass at 1907 meters altitude.
