Black Lake (Montenegro)

Weather…

Black Lake (Crno Jezero) is the most famous of the 18 glacial lakes within the Durmitor National Park in northern Montenegro. Tucked away at the foot of the majestic Međed peak, the lake is situated at an elevation of 1,416 meters above sea level. It is actually composed of two separate basins, the Big Lake and the Small Lake, linked by a narrow strait that often dries up during the summer months. The water exhibits a deep green to nearly black hue, resulting from the reflection of the surrounding dense coniferous forests and dark rock faces. A well-maintained hiking trail circles the lake, providing numerous vantage points for nature photography and wildlife observation. During the summer, the cool water is popular for rowing and swimming, while in winter, the lake often freezes over entirely. Black Lake serves as a central starting point for many challenging hiking routes across the Durmitor massif. The profound tranquility and pristine mountain air make it one of the country's most cherished natural landmarks.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The glacial lake is typically accessible via the main entrance of Durmitor National Park, often just a short distance from the town of Žabljak. Well-maintained walking paths usually guide visitors directly from the entrance area to the scenic shores.
📅
Best season
The most favorable time for a visit is generally during the late spring to early autumn months, when the snow has mostly melted and temperatures are comfortable. Summer usually has handy conditions for hiking, though mountain weather can change rapidly.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The primary walking trail encircling the lake is mostly flat, well-maintained, and typically suitable for visitors of varying fitness levels. However, connecting trails leading deeper into the mountainous national park tend to be steeper and much more uneven.
🎒
What to bring
Standard walking shoes or lightweight hiking boots are typically sufficient for navigating the main path around the water. It is always advisable to carry layered clothing, basic rain protection, and sufficient drinking water in this alpine environment.
🅿️
Parking
Designated parking areas are generally available near the national park's main entrance point, accommodating both passenger cars and tourist buses. Arriving earlier in the day during peak summer season is usually recommended to secure a convenient spot.
⚠️
Safety
Visitors should typically remain cautious on wet sections of the trail, as wooden bridges and rocky outcrops near the water can easily become slippery. It is recommended to stay strictly on the marked paths to protect the fragile alpine ecosystem.

Time needed
A leisurely walk around the entire lake typically takes about one to two hours, depending heavily on one's walking pace and the number of photo stops. Visitors often plan to spend a relaxed half-day in the area to fully appreciate the dramatic mountain views.
