Țipova (Moldova)

Weather…

Țipova is home to one of the most spectacular cave monasteries in the Dniester region and one of the largest in Europe. The monastic complex is divided into three distinct chronological sections: the earliest (Exaltation of the Holy Cross) dates back to the 11th century, with subsequent expansions in the 14th and 16th centuries. The site comprises 18 interconnected cells and chapels carved into a sheer limestone face overlooking the river. The site is steeped in folklore. Local history claims that Prince Stephen the Great wed his wife, Maria Voichița, within these walls. Another myth suggests that the Greek poet Orpheus died here after descending into the underworld, adding to the site's mystical reputation. Many visitors come not just for history, but for the perceived spiritual energy of the cliffs. The surrounding nature reserve is equally compelling, featuring deep canyons and several waterfalls, with the tallest reaching 16 meters. Hiking down to the banks of the Dniester provides sweeping views of the river valley. Because of its remote location and unpaved access roads, Țipova remains a peaceful sanctuary, offering a raw and authentic experience of Moldova’s landscape and monastic tradition.
