Saharna (Moldova)

Weather…

Saharna is one of Moldova’s most revered pilgrimage sites, situated on the western bank of the Dniester (Nistru) River. The complex features the Holy Trinity Monastery, founded in 1776, and the much older Annunciation Cave Monastery, which dates back to the 13th century. According to local legend, a footprint of the Virgin Mary was discovered on a rock atop Grimidon Hill, where a small chapel now stands as a place of worship. Beyond its spiritual draw, Saharna is an impressive natural reserve. The Saharna River carves through a rocky canyon, creating a sequence of 22 waterfalls. The most famous is 'Cascada Mare' (The Big Waterfall), which drops 10 meters into a deep pool. Hiking trails wind through the lush valley, offering glimpses of limestone formations and ancient hermitages. The area is also an archaeological treasure, containing remains of Iron Age Geto-Dacian fortresses. The synthesis of religious devotion, pristine landscapes, and ancient history makes Saharna a unique destination. It is particularly atmospheric during major Orthodox holidays. Visitors are advised to wear sturdy footwear for the steep climbs and paths leading to the waterfalls. The journey from Chișinău typically takes about two hours by car or bus.
