The Saharna Waterfalls are located within the Saharna landscape reserve in the Rezina District, representing some of Moldova's most significant natural monuments. The Saharna River creates a total of 22 cascades as it winds through the rugged limestone landscape. The most prominent is the 'Groapa Țiganului' (Gipsy Hole) waterfall, which falls from a height of about 4 meters into a deep natural basin. The area's geology is defined by Sarmatian limestone cliffs formed during the ancient sea's recession millions of years ago. Beyond its hydrological appeal, Saharna is a major religious center, famous for the Holy Trinity Monastery established in 1495. The gorge hosts diverse flora, including rare steppe plants and protected tree species like oak and ash. Hiking trails lead to historical landmarks, such as the Geto-Dacian fortress on 'La Șanț' hill. Today, the site attracts both nature enthusiasts and pilgrims from across the region.

Best season
Saharna Waterfalls are most spectacular in spring (April-May), when snowmelt brings the highest water flow. In autumn (September-October) the surrounding forest colors are memorable.
Best time of day
Morning is good as the sun directly illuminates the waterfalls, creating rainbow effects. Late afternoon the falls are in the gorge's shadow - light becomes softer for photos.
Etiquette
Swimming in the waterfalls is not allowed to protect sensitive mosses and water quality. Take all litter with you - no bins along the trail.
What to bring
A polarizing filter for your camera reduces water glare and enhances colors. Non-slip shoes are essential due to wet rocks near the falls.
Getting there
The waterfalls are easily reached via a short hiking trail from the Saharna Reserve parking lot. The trail is well-marked and leads directly to the main fall 'Gropul Tiganului'.
What to expect
The waterfalls are impressive even outside peak season, but summer can be busy. Visit on a weekday for a quieter experience.
