The Tipova Waterfalls are located within the Tipova landscape reserve on the right bank of the Dniester River in the Rezina District. They are formed by the Tipova stream as it cuts through a deep limestone gorge, creating several distinct cascades. The tallest waterfall drops from a height of approximately 16 meters into a natural rocky basin. The surrounding area is historically significant as it hosts one of the largest Orthodox cave monasteries in Eastern Europe, with origins dating back to the 11th century. Geologically, the region is characterized by Sarmatian limestone layers containing fossils from millions of years ago. The gorge's specific microclimate supports rare flora and provides a habitat for numerous protected bird species. Best season
Tipova Waterfalls are most voluminous in spring (April-May) and offer the best show. In autumn (September-October), surrounding rocks are covered with colorful mosses and ferns.
Best time of day
Morning is convenient as light beautifully illuminates the cascades. Late afternoon brings long shadows that emphasize the texture of the limestone steps.
Etiquette
Climbing on wet limestone steps is life-threatening and forbidden. Please stay on the designated path to avoid trampling sensitive vegetation.
What to bring
Waterproof shoes with good grip are very important due to wet, slippery limestone slabs. A camera with a macro lens is excellent for close-ups of mosses and ferns.
Getting there
The waterfalls are accessible via a short but steep descent from the Tipova Reserve parking lot. The path is partly secured with wooden steps and railings.
