Soroca is a historically significant city in northern Moldova, majestically situated on the right bank of the Dniester River. The city is best known for the Soroca Fortress, originally built of wood by Stephen the Great in the late 15th century and later reconstructed in stone under Petru Rareș. The circular fortress is a masterpiece of medieval defensive architecture and was a key component of the Principality of Moldova's defense system. Another prominent landmark is the "Candle of Gratitude," a monumental tower inaugurated in 2004 on a hilltop overlooking the Dniester, offering sweeping views of the landscape. Soroca is also recognized as the "informal capital of the Romani people," with the flamboyant and unique architecture of the "Gypsy Hill" neighborhood serving as a major curiosity for visitors. The city has a long history of craftsmanship and agriculture, with the Dniester playing a central role in its commercial life. Today, Soroca remains one of Moldova's most popular cultural tourism destinations and a key administrative center in the north.
