Nativity Cathedral (Chișinău) (Moldova)

Weather…

The Nativity Cathedral is the principal Orthodox cathedral in Chișinău and a central landmark of the Moldovan capital. Built between 1830 and 1836 in the Neoclassical style, it was designed by architect Abraham Melnikov and commissioned by Metropolitan Gavriil Bănulescu-Bodoni. The cathedral is part of a grand architectural ensemble that includes a separate bell tower and the Holy Gates (Triumphal Arch), all located in the city's central park. Its design features a symmetrical cross-shaped floor plan, massive Doric columns, and a large golden dome that reflects the sunlight. During the Soviet era, the cathedral suffered significantly; the bell tower was demolished in 1962, and the main building was converted into an exhibition center. Following Moldova's independence, the complex underwent extensive restoration, and the bell tower was accurately reconstructed in 1997. Today, the interior is adorned with exquisite frescoes and icons, serving as the seat of the Moldovan Orthodox Church. It remains the most important site for national religious celebrations, drawing thousands of worshippers during Easter and Christmas.
