The Chișinău Circus, opened in 1981, is an outstanding example of Soviet Brutalist architecture. Designed by architects Semyon Shoikhet and Ala Kirilenko, the building was once one of the leading entertainment venues in the USSR, renowned for its state-of-the-art acoustics and lighting. The arena had a capacity of 1,900 spectators and was known for its versatility, allowing for both traditional circus acts and water ballets. The sculptural relief on the facade, depicting clowns and acrobats, emphasizes the playful function of the monumental structure. After years of decay, the building has been partially renovated and now occasionally hosts events, but it remains a powerful symbol of the architectural ambitions of the late Soviet era.

Visiting
The impressive brutalist building of the Chisinau Circus can be admired from the outside at any time as a striking architectural landmark. However, access to the interior of the large main arena is mostly restricted due to the building's ongoing need for extensive restoration.
Typical hours
For viewing and photographing the monumental facade from the outside, there are naturally no specific opening hours to worry about. If events or performances take place in the smaller, renovated annex, admission times will depend strictly on the respective show schedule.
Photography
The striking Soviet architecture with its unique sculptures provides a spectacular backdrop for all lovers of the brutalist design style. The massive concrete forms of the building look exceptionally striking in photographs, especially under a cloudy sky or during dusk.
Time needed
A brief half hour is usually sufficient for a quick walk around the building and capturing the absolute best photographic perspectives. However, if you plan to attend a live performance in the small hall, you should allocate about two hours for the complete circus experience.

The sightseeing can be wonderfully combined with a longer walk through the lively center of Chisinau and a visit to the Orthodox Cathedral. The many traditional moldovan restaurants in the surrounding area also invite you to take a delicious culinary break after the tour.

The circus is very conveniently located near the city center and is extremely easy to reach by public buses, trolleybuses, or local taxis. From many central hotels, the iconic building can even be comfortably reached by taking a longer, pleasant walk through the lively city streets.

It is highly worth checking the city's current cultural event calendars, as the smaller secondary hall is occasionally used for modern, entertaining shows. Be very careful when walking entirely around the building, as some of the external staircases are quite dilapidated and uneven.
