Stephen the Great Monument (Moldova)

Weather…

The Monument to Stephen the Great and Saint in the center of Chisinau is the most important national symbol of the Republic of Moldova. It was designed by sculptor Alexandru Plămădeală and cast in Bucharest in 1927, before being inaugurated in 1928 to mark the 400th anniversary of the prince's death. The bronze statue depicts the Moldavian ruler in full armor with a crown and an uplifted cross, emphasizing his role as a defender of the Christian faith. Throughout its history, the monument was moved several times, particularly during World War II when it was evacuated to Romania to protect it from Soviet troops. After its final return to its original location in 1945, it became the focal point for the independence movement in the late 1980s. Today, it is the site where foreign dignitaries and Moldovan citizens alike lay flowers to honor the country's sovereignty and history.
