Căușeni is a town steeped in history located in southeastern Moldova, situated along the Botna River. The town is most famous for its Church of the Assumption, a 17th-century architectural gem that was built semi-underground to circumvent Ottoman restrictions on the height of Christian places of worship. The church's interior houses rare and priceless frescoes, representing some of the most important examples of medieval Moldavian art. First mentioned in 1455, Căușeni once served as a residence for the Tatar khans of the region. Today, the town is a vital center for agriculture and food processing, particularly known for its wine production and canning industries. The surrounding landscape is defined by rolling hills and fertile valleys great for viticulture. A notable monument in the town honors Alexei Mateevici, the author of the Moldovan national anthem, who was born nearby. As the administrative center of the Căușeni district, the town features a well-developed infrastructure and remains a key transportation hub in the southeast.
