Triumphal Arch (Moldova)

Weather…

The Triumphal Arch in Chișinău, often called the 'Holy Gates,' is a prominent Neoclassical monument located in the heart of Moldova's capital. Built between 1840 and 1841 according to the designs of architect Ivan Zauszkievicz, it commemorates the victory of the Russian Empire over the Ottoman Empire during the Russo-Turkish War of 1828-1829. Standing 13 meters tall, the structure is built from local white limestone and rests on four massive pillars arranged in a square layout. A defining feature of the arch is the massive 6.4-ton bell housed within its upper tier, cast from the metal of captured Ottoman cannons. The arch was specifically commissioned when it was discovered that the newly built cathedral’s bell tower was insufficient to support the weight of this ceremonial bell. Located on the Great National Assembly Square, the monument serves as a central symbol of the city and is a key site for national celebrations and cultural gatherings.
