The 'Maria Bieșu' National Opera and Ballet Theater in Chișinău is Moldova's leading lyrical institution and a major cultural hub in the region. Although the theater company was established in 1957, the current landmark building on Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard was only opened in 1980. In 2012, the institution was renamed in honor of the world-renowned Moldovan opera singer Maria Bieșu, who performed there for decades.
