St. Teodora de la Sihla Church

The Church of St. Teodora de la Sihla in Chisinau is an architectural masterpiece in the Byzantine Revival style and one of the most elegant churches in the city. Built in 1895 by the renowned architect Alexander Bernardazzi, it originally served as a chapel for the adjacent girls' gymnasium. The facade is notable for its intricate limestone carvings, blending Oriental and classical motifs in a way that is unique to the region. During the Soviet era, the church was repurposed as a museum of history and religion, which helped preserve the building's structural integrity. In the early 1990s, it was returned to the Orthodox Church and underwent a meticulous restoration process. Today, it is an active parish known for its superb acoustics and magnificent interior murals. The building is a protected national monument and stands as a prime example of late 19th-century eclectic architecture in Bessarabia.
