Jemo Island (Marshall Islands)

Weather…

Jemo Island is a tiny, uninhabited coral atoll in the Marshall Islands that holds ecological significance far outweighing its small land area of 0.16 square kilometers. It is celebrated as one of the most critical nesting sites for the endangered green sea turtle in the central Pacific region. Historically, Jemo has been protected as a traditional reserve by the high chiefs (Iroij), who strictly controlled access to ensure the sustainability of its natural resources, a prime example of ancient indigenous conservation. The island's interior is cloaked in dense, ancient Pisonia forests, providing a haven for vast colonies of nesting seabirds. Additionally, Jemo is home to exceptionally large populations of land-dwelling hermit crabs that roam the forest floor. Because of its extreme isolation and the absence of permanent human settlement, Jemo remains a near-pristine maritime sanctuary, vital for the survival of diverse species across Micronesia.

📋 Practical info

📅
Best season
Jemo Island is a critical nesting ground for sea turtles - the main nesting season runs from June to October. The months January to April are better for travel due to calmer seas, but turtle activity is lower then.
🌅
Best time of day
Most turtles come ashore at night, so nighttime beach walks are most promising. During the day, you can find fresh tracks and occasionally resting turtles in shallow water.
📜
Etiquette
Only use red light when on the beach at night and keep at least 10 meters distance from turtles. Never dig for eggs or disturb clutches - this is strictly forbidden.
🎒
What to bring
A red headlamp allows you to move safely at night without blinding turtles. Light, sturdy shoes are important for walking on the sandy and partly rocky beach.
🧭
Getting there
Jemo is a small, uninhabited island typically reached by a chartered boat from Majuro or a nearby atoll. The trip requires an experienced crew and careful planning due to its remoteness.
🦌
What to expect
Because the island is very small, chances of seeing turtles are high - but only if you come in the right season. Be prepared to spend several nights if you want to be sure to witness nesting.
