Veymandoo is the capital of Thaa Atoll (also called Kolhumadulu), about 200 kilometers south of Malé. With around 1100 inhabitants, the island is fairly small but economically active. It is known for its thriving fishing fleet, which specializes in yellowfin tuna and skipjack tuna, both major export products of the Maldives. The island hosts the atoll administration office, a hospital, several schools and a modern harbor that handles cargo ships, speedboats and traditional dhonis daily. Through nearby Thimarafushi Airport, opened in 2013, Veymandoo is regularly connected to Malé by air. Tourism is growing slowly with emerging guesthouses and excellent dive sites at reefs such as Hirilandhoo and Vandhoo Kandu, where eagle rays, mantas and reef sharks are sighted. Traditional boat building using tropical hardwood is also still practiced here.
