Nilandhoo is the capital of Faafu Atoll, around 130 kilometers southwest of Malé. With about 1900 residents, the island is modest in size but among the most historically significant sites of the Maldives. It is home to the famous Foamathi ruins, ancient Buddhist and pre-Islamic temple remains that give the island a special archaeological status. The Aasaari Miskiy mosque from the 12th century is one of the oldest preserved mosques in the country, built from carved coral stones originally taken from the Buddhist temples, a testimony to the country's religious transition to Islam in 1153. Economically, Nilandhoo relies on fishing, boat building, agriculture and a quietly growing guesthouse tourism scene. The island has a school, a harbor, a health center and a small library that preserves local historical documents.
