HP Reef, also known as Rainbow Reef or Girifushi Thila, is located in the North Malé Atoll near the island of Girifushi. It is a protected marine area renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and bustling soft coral formations. The reef's topography is characterized by dramatic rock formations, deep canyons, and caves, such as the famous Blue Canyon, located at depths between 10 and 40 meters. Due to the strong currents prevalent in this area, HP Reef is a challenging dive site, yet it attracts an abundance of marine life, including barracudas, snappers, eagle rays, and occasionally reef sharks. The Maldivian government designated this area as protected as early as 1995 to preserve the fragile ecosystem from overfishing and environmental damage. For divers, the reef gives one of the most vivid underwater landscapes in the Maldives, with vertical walls covered almost entirely in orange, yellow, and purple soft corals.
