Addu City is the second largest urban region of the Maldives, located in Seenu Atoll, the southernmost atoll of the country, about 540 kilometers south of the capital Malé. The city was formed by the administrative merger of several inhabited islands such as Hithadhoo, Maradhoo, Feydhoo and Hulhumeedhoo, all connected directly by a 14 kilometer causeway road. With around 33000 inhabitants, Addu forms a standalone urban center anchored by Gan International Airport, a former British RAF military airbase. Its historical significance dates back to 1976 when the British forces withdrew and left their infrastructure behind. Today the landscape is shaped by wide asphalt roads, mangrove forests and the unique Eidigali Kilhi freshwater wetland. The economy is built on tourism with resorts like Equator Village, on fishing and on education through a Maldives National University campus. Culturally, the region stands out from the north thanks to its distinct dialect and strong local identity.
