Eidhigali Kilhi & Koattey (Maldives)

Weather…

Eidhigali Kilhi and the adjacent Koattey area on Hithadhoo island in Addu Atoll represent the largest wetland ecosystem in the Maldives. This protected area covers approximately 570 hectares and consists of a substantial freshwater lake surrounded by dense mangroves and coastal vegetation. It was officially designated as a protected area in 2004 due to its significant biodiversity and its role as a vital habitat for numerous migratory bird species. Historically, the area provided essential resources for the local community, and Koattey was once a site of ancient fortifications used for the island's defense. Today, it stands as a key site for environmental conservation and eco-tourism, supporting endemic species such as the Maldivian white tern. The wetlands also play a crucial ecological role in flood control and the natural replenishment of the freshwater lens on the island.
