Utheemu Ganduvaru is a historical wooden palace located on the island of Utheemu in the Haa Alif Atoll. It is the birthplace and childhood home of Sultan Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who is celebrated as a national hero for liberating the Maldives from Portuguese rule. In 1573, after eight years of foreign occupation, Thakurufaanu and his brothers led a successful revolt that restored Maldivian independence. The palace itself is a remarkably well-preserved structure, showcasing traditional Maldivian craftsmanship and 16th-century architecture.
