💡 Tips

  • Surf world-class breaks: 'Muli Inside' and 'Muli Outside' are legendary spots for surfers (best season: May to September).
  • Take a short boat trip to Veyvah island to see a beautiful traditional mosque built from coral stone.
  • Head to the harbor district in the late afternoon to watch fishermen bring in the day's fresh reef fish and tuna.
  • Carry Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) for small shops and cafes, as they may not always accept US dollars.
  • Respect prayer times: most local businesses will close briefly during these five daily periods.

Muli is the capital of Meemu Atoll, about 130 kilometers south of Malé, and is regarded as one of the quietest and most authentic atoll capitals in the Maldives. The small island has around 1100 residents and reflects a traditional, fishing oriented lifestyle, with whitewashed houses, narrow sandy lanes and coconut palms. Muli hosts an atoll administration office, a police station, a school and a hospital that serves surrounding inhabited islands. The economy relies on fishing, small kitchen gardens and a growing boutique tourism scene, thanks to excellent surf spots in the immediate vicinity, including Veyvah Point, Mulah Inside and Boahuraa Outside. The waves are best between March and October and attract experienced surfers from around the world. Resorts such as Medhufushi Island Resort and several liveaboard vessels use Muli as a base for diving trips to the manta and whale shark sites of the atoll.
