Vištytis Regional Park (Lithuania)

Weather…

Vištytis Regional Park, established in 1992 in the extreme southwestern corner of Lithuania, shares its borders directly with Poland and the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The undisputed centerpiece of the park is the massive and incredibly deep Lake Vištytis, affectionately referred to by locals as the 'European Baikal' of Lithuania. Its remarkably pristine, cold, and highly oxygenated waters provide a convenient habitat for rare fish species, particularly several varieties of whitefish (Coregonus). The landscape encircling the lake is shaped by the Sūduva Hills, gentle yet distinct elevations densely cloaked in majestic, ancient beech and oak forests. These protected woodlands are widely renowned for their abundance of large game; substantial and stable populations of red deer, roe deer, and wild boar thrive here in relative seclusion. Culturally, the area is defined by the historic border town of Vištytis and its traditional windmills, offering a captivating glimpse into the rural heritage of this tri-border region.
