Kybartai is one of the most critical border towns in the extreme southwest of Lithuania, serving as a direct gateway to the Russian exclave of Kaliningrad. The town's economic rise in the 19th century was the direct result of its connection to the strategic Saint Petersburg, Eydtkuhnen (East Prussia) railway line. This transformed Kybartai into a thriving customs and commercial hub. Architecturally, the town is noted for the imposing Neo-Renaissance Eucharistic Savior Church, beneath which lie massive vaulted cellars once used as customs warehouses. Internationally, the town is recognized as the birthplace of the renowned landscape painter Isaac Levitan. With nearly 5,000 residents, Kybartai remains a vital transit point and a living piece of railway history.
