Užupis Angel (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Užupis Angel is the undisputed landmark and spiritual centerpiece of the self-proclaimed Republic of Užupis, a bohemian and unconventional neighborhood in Vilnius. The bronze statue, depicting a majestic angel blowing a trumpet, was unveiled on April 1, 2002. Created by renowned sculptor Romas Vilčiauskas and architect Algirdas Umbrasas, the figure is perched atop an 8.5-meter-high white column in the district's main square. Before the angel was erected, the same spot was occupied by a large egg-shaped sculpture, from which, according to local legend, the angel eventually hatched. The trumpeting angel symbolizes the artistic rebirth, freedom, and creative spirit of Užupis, which transformed from a once-dilapidated and dangerous area into the Lithuanian equivalent of Paris's Montmartre. Surrounding the base of the column are plaques displaying the famous, humorous Constitution of Užupis translated into numerous world languages.
