Three Crosses (Lithuania)

Weather…

The Monument of the Three Crosses is one of the most distinctive landmarks in Vilnius, perched atop the Bleak Hill that towers over the Old Town. According to local legend, seven Franciscan monks were martyred on this site in the 14th century by pagan locals, which led to the erection of wooden crosses in their memory. The current majestic concrete crosses, which shine brightly above the city, were erected in 1989 as a powerful symbol of the Lithuanian national rebirth. They replace the monument originally created in 1916 by architect Antanas Vivulskis, which was dynamited in 1950 by order of the Soviet authorities during a nighttime operation; the rubble of those old crosses can still be seen at the base of the hill. The strenuous climb up steep wooden stairs is generously rewarded with one of the most spectacular panoramic views over all of Vilnius. The site exudes a magical atmosphere, particularly in the evening when the crosses are illuminated against the setting sun.

Visiting
The monument itself is completely open and free to visit at any time, standing tall on its prominent hill. It has a spectacular panoramic viewpoint over the Old Town of Vilnius and the surrounding natural landscapes.
🕒
Typical hours
Access to the hilltop is generally unrestricted, allowing for daytime visits or evening strolls. Sunset is particularly popular for viewing the city bathed in golden light, though the path is also accessible early in the morning.
📷
Photography
Photography is entirely welcomed and highly recommended from this vantage point. A wide-angle lens is well-suited for capturing both the imposing concrete crosses and the expansive cityscape below them in a single frame.
⏱️
Time needed
Expect to spend at least forty-five minutes to an hour for the full experience. This timeframe accounts for the slightly strenuous walk up the hill, taking time to admire the structure, and enjoying the magnificent views.
Combine with
This site pairs excellently with a visit to Gediminas' Tower, which sits on a neighboring hill. The nearby Kalnai Park also provides lovely walking trails for those who want to continue exploring the green spaces of Vilnius.
🧭
Getting there
Reaching the monument requires walking up a steep pathway and climbing numerous wooden steps from the base of the hill. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, as the terrain can be uneven and slightly demanding for some visitors.
💡
Insider tip
Consider bringing a bottle of water, especially during the warmer summer months, as there are typically no facilities or vendors directly at the summit. Arriving just before dusk allows you to see the city lights begin to twinkle.
