Prienai is situated at one of the most easy on the eye points of the Nemunas River in southern Lithuania, exactly where the river forms its famous great loops. The city is closely linked to the Great Nemunas Loops Regional Park, which protects a unique geomorphological landscape. Historically, Prienai was first mentioned in 1502 and developed into an important site for papermaking in the 18th century. A prominent architectural monument is the wooden Church of the Epiphany from 1750, one of the most valuable examples of Baroque wooden architecture in Lithuania. The surroundings of Prienai are now a center for aviation and active tourism, particularly through the Pociūnai airfield, known as an international center for gliding. The proximity to the resort town of Birštonas complements the region's tourist offerings with wellness and recreation facilities. The city itself maintains a peaceful atmosphere and preserves its traditions as a gateway to the middle Nemunas valley.
