Al Wathba Wetland Reserve (United Arab Emirates)

Weather…

The Al Wathba Wetland Reserve in Abu Dhabi was established in 1998 by the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, becoming the first area in the emirate to be legally protected. Originally a natural salt flat known as a sabkha, the site evolved into a complex ecosystem of lakes, reed beds, and dunes following the introduction of treated wastewater. Spanning five square kilometers, the reserve is internationally renowned as a prime breeding ground for the Greater Flamingo, with thousands of birds congregating during the winter months. In 2013, Al Wathba was officially added to the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance, highlighting its global ecological significance. The reserve supports a remarkable biodiversity, providing a habitat for over 250 bird species and various reptiles and small mammals. Visitors can experience the site through designated walking trails and bird hides, which offer a glimpse into the delicate balance between the desert environment and the thriving wetland oasis.
