Punia Forest

The Punia Forest is one of Lithuania's most valuable botanical sanctuaries, spreading picturesquely across a peninsula enclosed by a massive, 19-kilometer-long loop of the Nemunas river. This strictly protected reserve represents the last remnants of the ancient primeval forests that once covered the entire Baltic region. The area is particularly famous for its monumental, centuries-old oaks and pines, many of which are designated as independent natural monuments; the most famous is the 'Twin Oak'. Due to limited human interference, an exceptionally rich ecosystem has evolved here, providing a habitat for rare bird species, insects, and specialized fungi. Guided ecotourism hikes allow visitors to traverse the dense, moss-covered wilderness and immerse themselves in the mystical, silent atmosphere of a pristine forest that is largely left to its own natural progression.
