Medininkai Castle (Lithuania)

Weather…

Medininkai Castle, one of Lithuania's most remarkable fortifications, impresses with its massive scale and well-preserved brick defensive walls. It was built in the early 14th century to protect the capital city of Vilnius and surrounding territories from the constant incursions of the Teutonic Knights. Covering an enclosed area of 6.5 hectares, it is the largest enclosure castle in the country. The imposing five-story main tower served as a summer residence and secure retreat for the Lithuanian Grand Dukes. After being severely damaged by a fire in the late 15th century and losing its military significance, the fortress gradually fell into photogenic ruin. A meticulous restoration completed in 2012 saved the complex, which now houses an engaging historical museum.
