Al-Hamidiyah is an extraordinary place on the Syrian Mediterranean coast. The town was founded at the end of the 19th century by order of the Ottoman Sultan for Muslim refugees from Crete. To this day, many residents speak a Cretan-Greek dialect and maintain customs that distinguish them from their neighbors. Hamidiyah beach is known for its fine sand and clear water, making it a popular destination for bathers. Unlike the rocky sections further north, this stretch of coast provides wide, open spaces. The atmosphere is relaxed, and daily life is governed by the rhythm of the sea and fishing. Culinary-wise, Hamidiyah is a paradise for seafood lovers, where Greek-inspired preparation methods often meet Syrian spices. The town is easily accessible from Tartus. The best time for a beach holiday is from June to September, while spring is well-suited for cultural exploration in mild weather.
