Uraman Takht
Uraman Takht is the spiritual heart of the Hawraman region in Iranian Kurdistan, recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape since 2021. Perched on a steep mountainside in the Zagros range, its stone houses are built in a tiered fashion, blending seamlessly into the rugged terrain. The village and its surroundings showcase a resilient culture that has maintained its unique agricultural practices and social structures for millennia in a challenging environment. The village is famous for the annual Pir Shalyar ceremony, an ancient mystical festival featuring rhythmic chanting, traditional Kurdish dance, and ritualistic meals. The local dialect, Hawrami, is one of the oldest and most distinct branches of the Kurdish language. Visitors can enjoy exploring the narrow stair-like streets, visiting the local mosque with its wooden pillars, and purchasing handmade crafts like 'Givesh' footwear. The hospitality of the Hawrami people is legendary. Spring is the most enchanting season to visit, as the mountain valleys burst into green. It is reachable via dramatic mountain roads from the city of Marivan, offering some of Iran's most wide-open scenery.
