Before the Iran-Iraq War, it was the country's most modern and busiest port, but it was almost completely destroyed during the occupation and heavy fighting of the 1980s. Following the city's recapture and the end of the war, the port facility was extensively rebuilt and modernized. Today, Khorramshahr is part of the Arvand Free Trade Zone, which has tax incentives for investors and promotes cross-border trade, particularly with Iraq.
