Penjwen
Penjwen is set in the mountains of the Sulaymaniyah Governorate, right on the border with Iran. Due to its high altitude of about 1,300 meters, the town is famous for its exceptionally cool and pleasant climate in summer, making it a popular retreat for people from Iraq's hot plains. In winter, however, Penjwen often transforms into a snowy wonderland, as it is one of the coldest inhabited areas in the country. The region is the agricultural heart of the province and is particularly known for growing strawberries, grapes, and tobacco. The fertile valleys and pristine nature offer fantastic opportunities for hiking and nature observation. Culturally, Penjwen is closely linked to Kurdish identity and cross-border traditions. The local market is an experience in itself, where fresh agricultural products and local handicrafts can be found. The drive from Sulaymaniyah takes about an hour and a half and leads through easy on the eye hilly landscapes. The best time to visit is summer (June to August) to enjoy the freshness, or spring when the orchards are in bloom. For travelers seeking authentic Kurdish rural life and mountain tranquility off the beaten path, Penjwen is a convenient destination. The surroundings also offer insights into the region's recent history, as it played a strategic role during past conflicts.
