Lar National Park (Iran)

Weather…

Lar National Park is a 73,500-hectare protected nature zone in the central part of Iran, on the border of Mazandaran and Tehran provinces, directly at the foot of the massive Mount Damavand. This high-altitude mountainous valley was declared a national park in 1976 and upgraded to a strictly protected area in 1982. The park attracts many visitors particularly in late spring, when the extensive slopes are covered by millions of blooming wild red poppies and other alpine herbs. In the center of the area lies the reservoir created by the Lar Dam, which is one of the most important drinking water sources for the city of Tehran. The clear, ice-cold water of the river and the lake is home to the rare brown trout.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This photogenic nature reserve is usually accessed via roads branching off from the Haraz Highway northeast of Tehran, with the main entrance situated close to the Polour village and Mount Damavand.
📅
Best season
Late spring, specifically May and June, is undoubtedly the most spectacular time to visit, as the melting snow reveals animated carpets of wild red poppies dotting the lush mountain landscape.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain consists primarily of vast high-altitude grasslands, undulating hills, and river valleys surrounding Mount Damavand, offering relatively gentle hiking routes compared to alpine ascents.
🎒
What to bring
Visitors should pack sun protection, comfortable walking shoes for the grassy valleys, and layered clothing, as temperatures can drop noticeably in the shadows of the imposing Mount Damavand.
🅿️
Parking
Parking facilities are generally informal and localized near the ranger stations or designated entry gates, requiring visitors to explore the deeper, more pristine sections of the park on foot.
⚠️
Safety
Mobile network coverage can be quite unreliable in these expansive highland valleys; always inform someone of your planned route and avoid venturing too close to the fast-flowing mountain rivers.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit lasts a full day, providing ample time to appreciate the bustling spring flowers, enjoy a picnic by the Lar Dam reservoir, and take in the majestic views of Mount Damavand.
