Fjaðrárgljúfur (Iceland)

Weather…

Fjaðrárgljúfur is a sweeping canyon in southeast Iceland, located near the village of Kirkjubæjarklaustur. Measuring about two kilometers in length and reaching depths of up to 100 meters, the canyon was hollowed out by the Fjaðrá river over millennia. Geologically, it was formed approximately 9,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age, when glacial meltwater carved deep into the soft palagonite rock. The sheer walls are draped in a thick carpet of lively green moss, giving the landscape a surreal and fairytale-like quality. Well-maintained hiking trails run along the edge of the canyon, leading to several viewing platforms that offer dramatic perspectives of the rock formations and cascading waterfalls within. Due to the extreme fragility of its vegetation and high visitor traffic, the canyon is occasionally closed to the public to allow the environment to recover. Its combination of vertical cliffs, the winding river below, and the intense seasonal colors make it one of Iceland's most iconic natural landmarks.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
This spectacular deeply carved canyon is easily reachable via a short detour from the southern Ring Road. A gravel road leads directly to the primary visitor areas and observation decks.
📅
Best season
Summer provides the best conditions with spirited green moss covering the canyon walls. Winter access is often restricted or closed entirely by authorities to protect the fragile vegetation from damage.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
Well-maintained gravel paths and modern metal viewing platforms guide visitors along the dramatic upper rim. The terrain is largely even but features some moderate inclines near the top.
🎒
What to bring
Standard comfortable walking shoes are perfectly adequate for the constructed rim pathways. Bringing a light rain jacket is always a smart choice due to unpredictable Icelandic weather patterns.
🅿️
Parking
There are distinct lower and upper parking lots, though the lower lot is more frequently used. Facilities are basic, and parking spots can fill up extremely quickly during peak summer months.
⚠️
Safety
It is strictly forbidden to step off the designated paths or bypass ropes, as the moss is highly sensitive. The cliff edges are completely vertical and extremely dangerous if approached closely.
⏱️
Time needed
Walking the entire length of the marked rim trail and taking photographs typically takes about an hour. It is a visually rewarding but relatively brief stop on a longer sightseeing journey.
