Garðabær is an affluent municipality in Iceland's Capital Region, situated between Reykjavík and Hafnarfjörður. The history of settlement in the area dates back to the 9th-century Landnám period, evidenced by archaeological excavations at Hofstaðir, where remains of a large Viking longhouse were discovered. For centuries, the area remained rural and dominated by farming until the 1960s, when it began developing rapidly into a modern residential city. Today, Garðabær is known for its high standard of living and architecturally distinct residential neighborhoods. It houses significant cultural institutions, including the Museum of Design and Applied Art. A large portion of the municipality's territory consists of untouched nature, such as the Heiðmörk nature reserve and the Búrfellsgjá lava fields. Furthermore, the municipality borders Bessastaðir, the official residence of the President of Iceland, lending the area special national significance.
