Vestmannaeyjar, commonly known as the Westman Islands, is an archipelago of 14 islands and numerous sea stacks off the south coast of Iceland. The only inhabited island is Heimaey, which gained international fame in 1973 when the Eldfell volcano erupted, forcing the immediate evacuation of the entire population and permanently altering the local landscape. Historically, the islands are also noted for the 1627 Barbary pirate raid, often referred to as the 'Turkish Abductions,' which remains a significant event in local folklore. Today, the town is one of Iceland's most productive fishing ports and serves as a major hub for maritime activities in the North Atlantic. The area is home to the world's largest Atlantic puffin colony, making it a critical site for ornithological research and nature tourism. Every August, the town hosts Þjóðhátíð, Iceland's largest outdoor festival, celebrating the resilient spirit and unique cultural heritage of the islanders.
