Somogyvár National Heritage Site (Hungary)

Weather…

Somogyvár National Heritage Site is home to the ruins of the Benedictine Abbey founded by King Saint Ladislaus I in 1091. During the Middle Ages, it was one of the largest and most influential monastic centers in Hungary, inhabited by French monks from Saint-Gilles. The three-nave basilica and the monastery complex represented the pinnacle of Romanesque architecture in the region. King Ladislaus was initially buried here before his remains were moved to Nagyvárad (Oradea). The site survived several historical upheavals but fell into decline after the Ottoman invasion in the 16th century. Today, the archaeological park features a modern visitor center and the excavated foundations of the monumental abbey, providing insights into medieval power.
