Star Castle Balatonszentgyörgy
The Star Castle (Csillagvár) in Balatonszentgyörgy is a unique historical structure built in the 1820s by Count László Festetics. Despite its fortress-like appearance, the building was originally commissioned as a hunting lodge and never served a military purpose. Its name is derived from the unusual star-shaped ground plan, which evokes the style of Baroque military architecture. Today, the interior houses an extensive exhibition documenting life in the border fortresses during the Ottoman occupation, as well as the daily activities of the Hungarian peasantry. A highlight of the museum is the waxwork display, which realistically depicts historical scenes and figures. The castle is surrounded by a small park featuring a petting zoo and medieval-themed playground equipment for children. The property has panoramic views over the southwestern tip of Lake Balaton and the nearby Kis-Balaton nature reserve. Nowadays, Star Castle is a popular tourist destination that successfully blends cultural history with family-oriented recreation.
