Eséka is the capital of Nyong-et-Kéllé Department in the Centre Region and lies on the Nyong River about 120 kilometres west of Yaoundé along the railway to Douala. Its roughly 25 000 inhabitants are predominantly Bassa, a Bantu group known for masked cults, traditional drum music and a key role in national history, Eséka was the home of independence leader Ruben Um Nyobè. The economy rests on cocoa, palm oil, cassava and rail logistics, as the town is a key transshipment point for timber and minerals. Highlights include the Ruben Um Nyobè mausoleum in nearby Boumnyebel, the historic railway station, the Saint-Augustin Catholic mission and the spectacular Nyong waterfalls.
