Fort of Yaoundé Site (Cameroon)

Weather…

The Fort of Yaoundé site marks the historical foundation of Cameroon's current capital city. The fort was established in February 1889 by German explorers Richard Kund and Hans Tappenbeck as a military outpost and scientific research station for the German Empire. Its strategic location on one of Yaoundé's seven hills was chosen to overlook the surrounding Ewondo territory and secure the trade routes for ivory and rubber. Originally constructed with mud and stone, the station served as the nucleus for the town that would eventually grow into a major African metropolis. During the German colonial period, it was a vital link between the coast and the northern territories. Following World War I, the French administration designated Yaoundé as the administrative capital of French Cameroon in 1922, favoring its cooler inland climate. While very little of the original 19th-century fortification survives today, the site remains a significant historical landmark, representing the military and administrative beginnings of the city's modern identity.
