💡 Tips
- Located right on the Nyong River, the town is best appreciated through a traditional pirogue (canoe) ride arranged with a local boatman.
- Roads from Yaoundé are decent, but once in town, motorcycle taxis are the most practical way to navigate the streets.
- Tropical showers can appear suddenly; it is wise to carry a light rain jacket or umbrella when out exploring.
- You will need Central African CFA francs (XAF) in cash for the markets, as digital payments are generally not accepted.

Akonolinga is the capital of Nyong-et-Mfoumou Department in the Centre Region and lies on the Nyong River about 110 kilometres east of Yaoundé. Its roughly 30 000 inhabitants are mostly Yebekolo (Beti). The town is famed for the Nyong, one of Central Africa's few navigable waterways, traditionally travelled by pirogue. Lake Akonolinga is habitat for lungfish, crocodiles and rare waterbirds. The economy rests on cocoa, cassava, freshwater fishing, timber and a growing ecotourism hotel industry. Highlights include the historic Catholic mission, the central market with traditional crafts, Saint-Luc Hospital, internationally known for treating Buruli ulcer, and the Nyong waterfalls. The humid equatorial climate with two rainy seasons keeps the landscape green year-round.
