Bafia is the capital of Mbam-et-Inoubou Department in the Centre Region and lies about 120 kilometres north of Yaoundé on the edge of the humid transitional forest. Its roughly 70 000 inhabitants are mostly from the Bafia, a Bantu group known for a complex cultural calendar and rich masked-dance traditions. The economy rests on cocoa, maize, cassava and groundnuts, along with fishing on the Sanaga River. Bafia stands at the southern gate of the Sanaga valley, which hosts several major hydroelectric plants including Nachtigal Amont. Notable sites include the 1920s Catholic mission, the famous Petit Séminaire Saint-Augustin school and the annual Bafia cultural festivals with traditional dances and drums. The hot tropical climate with two rainy seasons supports productive year-round agriculture.
