Ngoumou is the capital of Mefou-et-Akono Department in the Centre Region and lies about 30 kilometres south-west of Yaoundé. Its roughly 15 000 inhabitants are predominantly Ewondo (Beti), a Bantu people known for traditional wood-and-mud architecture, Ndzang dances and the ritual Mvet harp music. The town sits in a hilly, densely forested landscape and acts as an administrative and market hub for around 50 surrounding villages. The economy rests on cocoa, cassava, bananas, poultry farming and a growing quarry industry serving the Yaoundé construction boom. Highlights include the nearby Mefou primate sanctuary, the Mvog-Betsi waterfalls, Notre-Dame de la Sagesse Cathedral and the wooden church of Akono. The humid tropical climate with two rainy seasons supports rich biodiversity and lush plantations year-round.
