Edéa lies on the Sanaga River between Yaoundé and Douala in the Littoral Region and is one of Cameroon's industrial heavyweights, with about 200 000 inhabitants. The city is best known for the Alucam aluminium smelter, commissioned in 1957, which uses hydropower from the Sanaga dam and accounts for a substantial share of national industrial exports. A timber industry, a pulp mill and several bauxite mining and processing projects are also concentrated here. Edéa is a node on the Douala, Yaoundé railway and on the main road linking the two metropolises, boosting logistics and food trade. The humid equatorial climate with two rainy seasons supports peripheral banana, palm-oil and rubber plantations. The Douala-Edéa Wildlife Reserve protects mangroves, manatees and forest elephants.
