Mbalmayo lies on the Nyong River in the Centre Region, about 50 kilometres south of Yaoundé, and is the capital of Nyong-et-So'o Department. With around 80 000 inhabitants, it is a historic forestry hub: even under German colonial rule, hardwoods such as sapele and iroko were rafted from here down the Nyong to Edéa and Douala. Today the town is home to the national forestry school (École Nationale des Eaux et Forêts), several timber companies and a major hospital network. The population is predominantly Ewondo and Bulu. Notable sites include the Catholic bishopric, the Marie-Reine-des-Apôtres national shrine, the Nyong floodplain reserve with monkeys and turtles, and the suspension-bridge trail across the river. The humid tropical climate sustains dense gallery forests and keeps the navigable upper Nyong high all year round.
