Mary Queen of the Apostles Basilica (Cameroon)

Weather…

The Basilica of Mary Queen of the Apostles in Mvolyé, a suburb of Yaoundé, is an architectural masterpiece and a major spiritual center of Cameroon. It was built on Mvolyé Hill, the site where Cameroon's first Catholic missionaries began their work in 1890. The current building was constructed between 1990 and 2006, making it one of the few basilicas in Central Africa. The architecture is modern and bold, with a distinctive roof structure reminiscent of a traditional tent and impressive stained-glass windows that bathe the interior in colored light. The basilica rests on 12 pillars representing the apostles and is crafted from local granite and wood, symbolizing its deep roots in Cameroonian soil. It can accommodate thousands of pilgrims and serves as a site for national pilgrimage and interreligious dialogue. The consecration took place in 2006 by Cardinal Jean-Louis Tauran on behalf of Pope Benedict XVI, highlighting the site's importance to the global church.
