Obala lies about 40 kilometres north of Yaoundé in the Centre Region along national road N1 and is the capital of Lekié-Sud district. With around 60 000 inhabitants, the town is an important agricultural market for the fertile Lekié plain, one of the most densely populated rural areas in Cameroon. The population belongs mostly to the Eton subgroup of the Beti, famed for their timber buildings, traditional drums and bilanga dances. The economy rests on cocoa, cassava, groundnuts, maize and poultry farming, supplemented by a growing food-processing industry. Notable sites include Sainte-Thérèse cathedral, the Lekié bishopric as seat of the Catholic diocese, the lively Wednesday market and the Mvog-Mbi cultural centre. The tropical climate with two rainy seasons sustains year-round vegetation with cocoa groves and gallery forests.
